The art of doing nothing

In Italian culture there is a concept: Dolce Far Niente–the sweet art of doing nothing. A way of existing in the moment; merely observing, marveling and luxuriating in life’s simple pleasures–and finding quiet satisfaction.

In our corner of the US, the dark, gray days and relentless winter rain can make for a long season. Many yearn for spring’s arrival. And yet there can be room for excitement and contentment in the longing and the expectation of good things to come. Like tulip bulbs hiding in the rich, Pacific Northwest soil, we can tuck in and give ourselves permission to slow down and regenerate. One of the things I love most about my work as a massage therapist is the opportunity to invite busy, overstimulated souls to do just that.

While receiving massage therapy we have the opportunity to exist in the moment. We can marvel in the profound effect of positive, therapeutic touch. Quiet satisfaction can be found in the knowledge that there is full permission to simply be. And how sweet it is. Dolce far niente.
