Healthy Scalp, Healthy Hair
We’ve all been there….dry, itchy scalp, even some flakes. But how many of us realize that the health of our scalp directly improves our hair growth, density and volume? The scalp is integral to having healthy hair! The scalp houses over a million hair follicles and also acts as a protective barrier from the external environment into the skin.
What are signs that your scalp may be suffering? There could be many clues, but the most common include burning, itching, flaking, excess oiliness and hair loss/thinning. It’s always important to consider having your symptoms evaluated by a physician, especially if they are long standing or seem to be worsening. Diagnosable conditions that can affect the scalp include seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, bacterial infections, folliculitis and certain autoimmune conditions. These conditions likely require intervention and next strep treatment considerations. However, here are some basic tips to help get started towards improving the health of the scalp:
1. Eat a nutrient dense diet, rich in whole foods with a variety of colors - vitamin deficiencies can lead to excess dandruff production and even make the scalp more prone to infection
2. Use paraben and sulfate-free shampoos and hair care products - certain chemicals can irritate the surface of the scalp and thus cause problems for the hair follicles
3. Avoid over washing your hair - this may come as a surprise, but frequent, daily hair washing can strip the natural oils provided by the scalp and cause increased irritation
4. Use argan or castor oil topically - both have compounds that have benefician anti inflammatory effects and can also help improve moisture retention in the scalp
5. Engage in scalp massage - by gently massaging the scalp, you can help increase blood flow and circulation to the follicles to help provide them with fresh nutrients and oxygen to keep the scalp healthy
